Melbourne is a city that truly has it all. From grungy laneways, iconic buildings and sights, rolling vineyards, coastline charm and moody industrial spaces. But it also has a reputation for packing all the seasons into one day.
Once the question has been popped and the ring on the finger, the next decision is to choose when to get married. When is the best time to get married in Melbourne? The answer? It depends on your vibe, vision and what matters most to you. But here’s my breakdown of each season; the good, the tricky and the photo magic you can expect.
Best for: Blossoms, soft light and gardens in full bloom
If you’re dreaming of romantic garden ceremonies, golden sunsets and florals everywhere, Springs might be your sweet spot. Melbourne’s parks and gardens are bursting with colour. Think Royal Botanic Gardens, or the Dandenong Ranges. November is when vineyards are full of foliage, making for gorgeous vineyard shots.
Pros: Glorious golden light, mild temperatures, longer days.
Cons: Weather can be unpredictable. Bring a clear umbrella just in case! November is one of the most popular months to be married. Book venues and suppliers early to avoid disappointment.
Best for: late night receptions, epic sunsets, beach weddings, balmy days
Summer in Melbourne brings the sunshine, and the heat. It’s great for long days, outdoor canapés, relaxed party vibes and those who love the idea of an outdoor celebration.
Photographer’s take:
Pros: plenty of natural light, warm evenings, undertaking formalities while it’s still light, golden hour goodness
Cons: harsh midday sun. It can get very hot, especially during late January and into February
Pro tip: schedule portraits for later in then day for the most flattering light. And have plenty of water on hand for yourself and your guests!
Best for: rich colours, cosy moods
Autumn is one of my absolute favourite times to shoot weddings in Melbourne. The light is that bit softer, the colours richer and the weather is often just right. It’s also peak time for many venues.
Pros: Autumn leaves, softer light, fewer heatwaves, beautiful skies
Cons: can book out quickly – it’s popular!
Favourite part. That golden light filtering through vineyards or tree lined laneways – dreamy.
Best for: moody romance, budget conscious couples, intimate venues
Winter weddings are definitely increasing in popularity. And there’s good reason why. With the right venue, think warm interiors, candlelight, and cosy details, a winter wedding can be incredibly romantic and atmospheric. Plus, vendors and venues may be more available and adorable.
Pros: soft, diffused light all day long and fewer crowds at popular spots
Cons: shorter days means less time for portraits – careful planning is key.
Pro tip: opt for an earlier ceremony time or a first look to avoid running out of light. Embrace the mood: fireplaces, velvet textures, and rainy reflections make for some stunning storytelling.
Sooo, what is the best season to get married? There’s no one size fits all. Spring and summer offer balance and beauty. Summer brings vibrant energy and winter gives you moody and intimacy. The key is knowing your priorities.
