More and more couples are bucking tradition and choosing to do a “first look” or reveal. That is, they choose to meet prior to the ceremony and most of the bridal and couples portraits are done during this time. Of course, this is not for everyone, but if you’re weighing up your options, here are some benefits of a first look as well as some considerations:

• Some couples are a little shy or simply don’t like being the centre of attention at the ceremony so it’s a nice way to see each other privately away from prying eyes and let the tears flow!

• A first look gives you more time with your guests. You can enjoy the time mingling and enjoying a cheeky champagne or two with your nearest and dearest instead of going off and having your photos done during the canapes/pre dinner drinks.
• It may work better for the logistics of your day especially if there’s a tight timeline between the ceremony and reception.

• There’s more light available. This is especially important during the cooler months when sunset occurs a lot earlier. It definitely solves the problem of running out of available light after the ceremony!
• Makes for amazing photo opportunities to capture genuine reactions and emotions in a more controlled environment.

• It may not be the right choice in the middle of Summer when extreme temperatures can reach in excess of 40 degrees! The light is also at it’s brightest, creating harsh highlights and shadows. As photographers, it’s our job to produce amazing work under any lighting conditions but it’s not ideal.

• Consider family members. It may have been Mum or Dad’s dream to walk their beloved daughter down the aisle, to ‘give her away’ for the first time, so taking that away from them may require a gentle approach!
• Some couples enjoy the anticipation and excitement of waiting until the ceremony to see each other.
