One of the questions I am asked most frequently when photographing a family portrait or engagement shoot is “What should we wear?” There are several things to take into consideration:

• Uniformity. A similar colour palette amongst everyone in the shoot always works well. That doesn’t necessarily mean ‘matchy matchy’ but if you pick one or two shades all wear something in that hue, it creates some togetherness. Neutral colours with limited or no writing on the clothing is ideal.

• Get Comfy! And no, this does not mean to don your trakky daks! If you feel comfortable, it will be portrayed in the photos. My shoots tend to be active so something you can run around in works best. Think smart, but casual.

• Timeless. Hopefully you’ll choose to print some photos to hang on your wall; you don’t want to cringe every time you walk past that picture because what you wore was so last season!

• Think about the weather and let your personality shine through! Accessorise in Winter with those hats and beanies, in Summer, necklaces, earrings or whatever suits your style!

• Think of the colour wheel. Remember learning about colours in primary school? Contrasting colours are visually appealing. If you’re having a shoot in a park or an area with lots of green foliage, you could consider a pop of red for example.

The most important thing is to be true to yourself, and you’ll have fun doing it!
